I swear; the older Nora gets, the cuter the clothes are.
Girls’ clothes are ridiculously irresistible from the very beginning, of course, but you can only do so much with a roly-poly baby. Sure, Nora had sweater dresses and leggings and peacoats… but somehow, they don’t look quite as adorable when the kid can’t stand on her own. :)
For her birthday, Nora got a pair of RED skinny jeans from my mother-in-law. I can’t get enough of them.
Sadly, we have to retire the custom Elmo shirt now, because I noticed on this day that her belly kept making its way out of it. :) Aw well, it had a good run. This was her only piece of “character clothing,” so it was one of her favorites. She actually has a pair of Elmo jammies now, so I hope they can fulfill the void in her heart, haha.
{This is what she does when she hears something. A train in the distance, a dog barking in the neighborhood. Anything that is “out of the ordinary.” We’ll ask, “Do you hear [the dog barking]?” And her little voice excitedly answers, “Yeah!”}
I mock myself here, but I’m actually pretty “responsible” when it comes to buying Nora clothes. I try to get the best deals by leveraging sales and coupons, I try to buy things a little big at first so that they last a little longer. I don’t think I go nuts. But it is SO.HARD. not to.
What are your favorite baby clothing items? What are your weaknesses? Where are your favorite places to shop for kids?
I’m on the hunt for a good winter jacket that is compatible with being in a car seat—so something relatively thin, looking at good fleece again. Last year, she had a North Face jacket and a Columbia one as well (both gifts) that were wonderful. North Face is expensive—too expensive, really—but with our winters as long as they are, a good coat usually more than pays for itself… we’re looking at 5-6 months of near-daily wear! And with her North Face, we actually got two winters out of it; maybe we could again? Columbia has more affordable options. What do you put on your toddlers in the winter?

I'm Heather. I'm 33 and have been married to Michael for seven years. Together, we have two beautiful little girls we love more than anything, and a miniature dachshund who drives us crazy. I'm a full-time working mom who has very little time for my own "stuff" these days, like home improvement, cooking/baking, cake decorating, and photography. Despite the team not making the playoffs since 1999, I'm STILL a Buffalo Bills fan, which I think speaks to my loyalty AND sense of humor. I can't wait to pick up the pace with travel again some day... you know, when we're done being ruled by tiny fists. Welcome to my blog. The Address

I got a Northface for this year. Yes they are pricey but to be so thin and warm works perfect with winter and the carseat.
Her jeans are so cute, I love old navy kids clothes!
Hey Heather! Good to see you. I thought you gave up on me a long time ago. :) I still check in on you and your family. Always good to see Brayden growing and reaching new milestones. He’s clearly a happy boy!
I bought a North Face Denali jacket for my daughter to wear this winter, as we are in the Northeast too and I know she will get lots of good use out of it. I bought it used on ebay ($25 including shipping). The only way you can tell it is used is the fact that another little girls name is written on the inside. :-)
Hi Andrea. What a deal! I keep hearing people say to check consignment shops for winter wear. We need to get her boots and snow pants this year (to play outside!) and apparently some people have good luck with getting that type of stuff there. But I don’t know, in this area, it seems like that stuff would get snapped up so quickly!
Hi Heather! Just curious how you got two winters out of her North Face jacket? I’m also looking to order my daughter a winter jacket that works well with a car seat and is warm enough, and I’m having a hard time swallowing the price of North Face. Did it run true to size or did you ‘buy big’ and then was able to have her wear it two winters in a row? I also just want to make sure I order big enough to last all winter!! Thanks and good luck!!
Hey Chelsey! Michael’s aunt bought Nora her Denali jacket during her first winter. She was only 3-4 months old. She got her the jacket in 3-6m size, and it was HUGE! Seriously, huge. Especially the sleeves, they were so long. But still, we put her in it occasionally starting at around 5 months old (you can see photos of her in it here). Obviously we just rolled up the sleeves and it worked, but it was big. At that age, we were mostly just using blankets and her Cozy Cover in the infant seat, so it wasn’t an every day thing. But last year, she wore it nearly every day. She was about 13-19 months old, and it fit well… and it was supposedly 3-6m size! I think it fit more like it was 12-18m. Ridiculous. Granted, Nora’s not a big kid, but clearly the discrepancy shouldn’t be that large.
So, to answer your question… yes, it was just large for the first winter. I don’t know if the toddler sizes run as large as the infant sizes do, so I’m a little nervous to order. I would ideally like to find a place locally that carries them so I can try them on her. Because if I order a 2T now, is that like a 3T? If so, that might be nice, could get two winters out of it again. But I don’t want it to be totally ginormous either. That’s my thought process. I hope that helps!
Oh, and Chelsey, here are some additional pics of her in it from last year. At the end of October (nearly 14 months old). I can’t find any immediately available pics of her in it later in the season, but you can see in October that she still had room to grow in it! :)
We abstained from getting them good coats last year (and I’m glad we did because the weather was so dang mild) but this year I am getting them Patagonia down sweater coats. They are $88 (I think) so not cheap and from what I’ve heard they run somewhat smaller, so I’m getting Ry a 3T and Reese a 2T but they pack down really small, so I feel comfortable having them bundled in them in the car seat. Obviously for long trips they’ll be coatless (for comfort) but to dress them and get them out and into preschool the coat will stay on. HTH!
Oh, and as far as clothes go for girl stuff I love Old Navy and Tea Collection. Tea is my splurge for Reese (and now Lola) but I try to shop the sample sale sites and buy stuff through that. The leggings run big, or maybe they seem to because my kids are skinny minnies with long legs, so length that works often creates waists that don’t. But the tops run true to size. HauteLook and Gilt have sales often. Also, for skinny jeans I splurge on babyGap mini skinnies. They have adjustable button waists so I can buy them extra long and cinch the waist down really tight so that I can get Reese through the whole season in the same pants :)
I have seen a lot of winter gear such as boots and snowsuits at consignment sales and also yard sales. There is a really nice consignment sale in our area called ‘Just Between Friends’ that usually has a ton of that kind of stuff at great prices. They only allow clothing/gear for the specific season that the sale is taking place in so right now would be a great time to find winter gear. There are a couple of JBF sales in every state so maybe there is one close to you. I’m pretty picky as far as clothing goes and don’t think I would pick up a winter coat there but as far as just snow stuff goes I’d think you would find that pretty easily.
My mom and aunt love to go yard saling so they have some luck finding stuff for me. I’m not big into shopping that way because I just don’t have the time. Fortunately they both know my taste and my standards and usually find great deals. The snowsuit we have for Lena this year looks like it was never even worn and it is from L.L.Bean and cost under $5 at a yard sale.
she is such a cutie!! do you watch Up All Night? have you ever been told that nora looks like the baby on that show? i think so :)
Kimberley, I’ve never seen it, but I’ll have to check it out! Nora’s doppelganger! Or maybe there is just something I haven’t been telling you all… ;)
