Surprising Our Families
When we found out I was pregnant with Nora, it was a Tuesday morning, and it just so happened that we had plans to see Michael’s family that following Saturday. We decided right away that we were going to tell our news to our families—just parents and siblings—at the first opportunity, so we baked up (literally, ha) a surprise for Michael’s family, then made last-minute plans to see and surprise my family as well. I was only five weeks pregnant but it was too hard to keep quiet and already having the plans for a get-together presented the perfect opportunity.
This time, we had JUST seen both of our families for Thanksgiving—I got the positive test on the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend—plus I had been through a miscarriage (more on that another time), so we decided to wait for 1) a confirmation of a heartbeat via ultrasound, and 2) the opportunity to tell everyone in person again.
That opportunity? Christmas.
A week before Christmas, we went in for an ultrasound at 7 weeks to confirm a viable early pregnancy. We saw a little bean—measuring right on target, and with a perfect little heartbeat.
Then we had to figure out exactly how we were going to tell. With Nora, we made a cake that was pink and blue in the middle. This time, we struggled a bit. In fact, we didn’t come up with what ended up being THE plan until the early afternoon on Christmas Eve!
It was worth the last-minute scramble to get it all set up, though, because the reactions were awesome. And what better way to announce a pregnancy on Christmas than to make the news an actual GIFT? :)

I'm Heather. I'm 33 and have been married to Michael for seven years. Together, we have two beautiful little girls we love more than anything, and a miniature dachshund who drives us crazy. I'm a full-time working mom who has very little time for my own "stuff" these days, like home improvement, cooking/baking, cake decorating, and photography. Despite the team not making the playoffs since 1999, I'm STILL a Buffalo Bills fan, which I think speaks to my loyalty AND sense of humor. I can't wait to pick up the pace with travel again some day... you know, when we're done being ruled by tiny fists. Welcome to my blog. The Address

Ha! Your dad’s reaction was awesome! :-)
Awww! That is so fun! I love that you got it all on video!
Congratulations!!
I too thought twins! Then multiples! ;). Your dad was hilarious. And I can’t believe Nora didn’t ruin the surprise b/c after the third time, she definitely knew there was balloons in there! LOL! So great!
Love the video – what an adorable way to tell your families!! Your dads reaction was my favorite :-) I’m so sorry to hear about your miscarriage. I lost my first pregnancy this year. I just got put on Clomid and came to your blog to re-read your experiences on it. I am so happy for you and look forward to reading about Baby #2!
Man, your family is adorable. Congrats again!
Congratulations! I love that you are so creative with your ‘expecting’ announcements. I’m sure Nora will be a wonderful big sister.
I’m sorry to hear you had a miscarriage, I lost my first pregnancy mid-last year, and while it happened early on, it is still upsetting, and has made me more cautious in this pregnancy. I’m just a few weeks behind you and we were far less creative in telling our families the news. :)
Congratulations! Cute video. I am very sorry to hear about your loss. I lost my first pregnancy and know how hard it can be.
I absolutely LOVE your dad’s reaction…I can only imagine my dad would say the exact same thing!! What a fun way to make the announcement and even better that you have it captured on video! :)
SO incredibly happy for you guys! What a great video! Your dad’s reaction is priceless, ha
That’s great!! Love that idea.
I’m sorry to hear about your miscarriage too – I also had one in October. I’m now pregnant again with #2 but haven’t told anyone yet because I’m waiting for the ultrasound to confirm everything looks okay.
Love your dad’s response!
I’m sorry to hear about your miscarriage. I lost my first pregnancy back in October, and am now pregnant again with #2. We had our first ultrasound last week, everything looked great, and we are eagerly planning when and how to tell our parents.
love it!!
That was fantastic!
That was so great! I love your Mom’s reaction……and your Dad’s :-)
Your dad’s reaction was seriously the best!
I don’t even know you or your family in real life and I totally cried at this! How sweet!
Your Dad’s reaction was hilarious!
Congrats again. Hope you’re feeling great!
What a great way to share the news with your family! Your dad’s reaction was priceless, great you got it on video!
I’m sorry to hear about your miscarriage – I’ve had 2 myself & can still remember every ounce of the pain, both physical & emotional. Some wounds never fully heal & we take more caution now as well. But we’ve been lucky enough to have been blessed with our son & hope to give him a sibling soon. I’m also a fellow Clomid mommy, I find your blog so relatable on so many levels. Thanks so much for continuing to share with us.
