I’m going to Ft. Lauderdale for work, not with my little family. BUT if I have to be away from my family for a few days, my boss and coworkers are pretty awesome. And it’s a retreat, during which we have quite a bit of free time and fun “team building” (see: shopping, laughing, eating, etc.) planned, so it’s not your typical work travel.
We go in a few weeks, and my boss gave us our preliminary itinerary this morning. We have a few holes to fill. And since all of you have been so helpful with travel suggestions in the past, I figured I’d throw it out there to see if anyone has any ideas for us.
(Image Source: Trip Advisor)First, we’re looking for a fun “team building” activity. My boss said that if your typical HR person would plan it, it’s not for us. So no ropes courses or trust falls will be happening, my friends. To give you an idea—one of my teammates wanted all of us to go sky diving. Thankfully, I have another mom on the team who nipped that one in the bud with me. When I was 18? Sure. When I have two little kids at home? No. Parasailing has been mentioned, but… meh? It’d be cool, and I’d do it, but I’ve been before. We’ve tried Googling but it’s not turning up anything overly exciting. We did get a good laugh over potentially taking a group Segway Tour, though. Sweeeeeet. Any ideas?
Secondly, restaurants. Always looking for restaurants. Looking for a mix of more casual, fun places and maybe one or two “fancier” places as well. Recommendations?
And if there’s anything else I should know about Ft. Lauderdale, lay it on me. I’ve never been!
Definitely looking forward to putting my toes in some sand…

niiiice – recently at work a few of our departments have gone to a place and done group cooking/chopped kind of stuff – I’d see if there is a place around there that would do that – have a great time – don’t suppose it is when buffalo is playing miami? no such luck, eh?
Do the Segway tour!
Segway tours are AWESOME! I did one in San Francisco and of all the activities from all the trips I’ve taken, the Segway tour was the best!
I have enjoyed your blog for years without commenting – but I just have to on this one since my husband is a Fort Lauderdale native!
You’ll probably want to be on/near the water while you’re here (it’s what Fort Lauderdale is known for) so I’d get out on a boat – the water taxi, the Carrie B, or the Jungle Queen for a tour. (I’d suggest Bluefoot Pirate Adventures if you had the girls along, but their website also says they do adult events.) You could even head out to the Everglades to do an airboat tour – the closest place would probably be Everglades Holiday Park.
Las Olas is a great street/area to check out for food and shopping. Other than that, for restaurants, Steak 954 and Kaluz are two (fancier) options where you can sit near the water. For casual spots, we like Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza, and we LOVE the Southport Raw Bar. It looks like a hole in the wall but you can sit outside, the seafood is fresh (great conch chowder too!) and the beers are cold. :)
