It occurred to me that it’s been a while since I’ve posted any photos of Tessa. Or talked about her, for that matter.

The Little Girl has always been a show-stopper. Whenever we’re on walks, we get all kinds of action thanks to our dog. What can I say? There’s just something about dachshunds. She’s like a people magnet.

Children exclaim, “It’s a hot dog!” or “It’s a wiener dog!” and ask us if they can pet her. (We always let them, but believe it or not, Tessa’s actually a bit hand shy. She will walk up to someone boldly, but the minute they try to put their hands on her? She cowers and wants us to pick her up. She’s a sissy.)

Adults coo over her. We also get a lot of “Is she full grown?” questions. I think their first impressions are always that she’s a puppy since she’s so “small.” In reality, she’s just healthy. Most dachshunds are overweight, so people aren’t used to seeing dachshunds of Tessa’s size. You know, the size they’re supposed to be.

Even when people drive past us in cars, you can always see their expressions change when they notice little Tess. We’ll see them smile, or sometimes can even read their lips when they say, “Look at the hot dog.”

When she was a puppy, she was so sickeningly cute that all of this activity was increased tenfold. So we’re used to it by now. We’ve basically heard it all when it comes to comments about Tessa.

But several weeks ago, we heard a new one.

We have a Blockbuster within walking distance of our house. On nice weekend evenings, we’ll sometimes walk Tessa over there to rent a movie. (We always pick her up and take her inside with us–She’s really good, just hangs out in my arms, and the Blockbuster people are really nice about it.)

Anyway, we walked over there and as we approached the door, an elderly man came walking out, took one look at us, and goes “Oh! A sausage dog!”

He then told us about how so-and-so’s uncle’s friend’s mother had a dachshund when he was growing up. (This is a common occurrence, too. Everyone knows a dachshund somehow.)

After he left, Michael and I laughed. A sausage dog.

There’s just no arguing with that.

Well, I know you hear it all of the time, but I have one that’s 12 years old and she is EXACTLY the same color as Tessa. Everytime I see Tessa on your blog, I think of our dog, Mini.

Thanks for sharing! I always enjoy your posts :)

  2. We have two Black and Tans…and how you just described Tessa is exactly how things go in our house too! Jack is very skinny but healthy, but a whole lot smaller then most Doxies. Then Riley is probably about 3 lbs heavier, but still smaller then most. It is pretty amazing how fat people let their “sausage” dogs get.

My dog does the same thing with people–runs up, then cowers. We were walking him and a dog whisper wanna be lady told me that he will start biting people if we don’t nip this right away. WTF.

I hate when I see dogs overweight. It just seems so sad to me. We had a neighbor at our old apartment who never walked her dogs, and they were at least 50 pounds overweight :( It seems like a type of abuse to me..

We have a rat terrier and people comment a lot about our “puppy” when she is actually 8 years old.

Doxies seem to be getting more popular in this area, but they are still adorable to see.

I’ve always known dachshunds as sausage dogs, and a mini poll of my lab-mates agrees – maybe it’s a British thing …

She’s adorable :) And our dog does cower when people try to pet him even if he runs up to them, it’s kind of strange.

She’s a good size! We always get the wow you’re dog is fat. No, no he’s not fat. He’s the averge size for a male and doesn’t have any fat on him. I get a little offended at that!

My husband’s grandpa calls ours a sausage dog too! That’s so funny! When we first brought her to visit, he exclaimed “oh, y’all got one of those little sausage dogs!” I’d never heard of it either.

We always get people asking us what kind of dog she is. Her dad was long-haired so she has a bit longer hair than most, but to me she is still so obviously a dachshund. She’s also teeny tiny though, so maybe that’s why.

She’ll do the same thing with running up to people to be friendly, then as soon as they stick that hand in her face, she runs between my legs and peeks around at them with weary eyes.

    Dachshunds are the best :)

Hehe, we say sausage dog in England! And in Hebrew the word is the same! :)
