Conan Rules, Leno Drools
I’d like to tell you all that I predicted this. And I sort of did.
You see, I knew that Leno’s primetime gig was never going to last. Still, I could never have predicted what a clusterfuck of a situation this whole thing would become.
Conan has effectively been thrown out on his ass for no reason at all, except that Jay Leno is a selfish douchebag. It is being reported today that Conan has officially signed paperwork that releases him from his contract with NBC. And so it’s over. OVER FOR NBC, anyway. I hope that Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show” and the network burn to the ground. I don’t watch anything else on NBC, and I have never been so grateful to not be supporting a particular network.
NBC’s treatment of a man who was a long-time, dedicated employee is completely sickening to me. I know it’s not the first time someone has been wronged for the sake of “business,” but the way this has played out has been ludicrous.
The worst part of it all is that Conan O’Brien is truly a class act. I loved his statement released earlier this month, when all of this controversy really started to pick up. I especially loved the end (after several paragraphs of expressing his disappointment and explaining his position):
Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.
LOVE.
Conan has handled himself with grace and poise throughout the whole process during which NBC completely screwed him over. (To be fair, he does get $45 million out of the exit deal. Not too shabby!)
Most frustrating is the fact that everyone knows that NBC and Jay Leno are wrong… except NBC and Jay Leno. Jimmy Kimmel made an absolute fool out of Leno (on Leno’s own show!) last week. And then, just this morning, I saw this clip on Michelle’s blog:
Here’s hoping Conan ends up with a much better gig and Leno falls in the ratings (AND off the face of the Earth).
TEAM CONAN, baby. TEAM CONAN.

I'm Heather. I'm 33 and have been married to Michael for seven years. Together, we have two beautiful little girls we love more than anything, and a miniature dachshund who drives us crazy. I'm a full-time working mom who has very little time for my own "stuff" these days, like home improvement, cooking/baking, cake decorating, and photography. Despite the team not making the playoffs since 1999, I'm STILL a Buffalo Bills fan, which I think speaks to my loyalty AND sense of humor. you know what else is awful about this? they uprooted conans family from new york to live in California FOR THE SHOW! I’m with you with team conan all the way.
I’m so bummed about this…I love Conan, and I like Krystie I feel so bad that he – not to mention his entire staff – had to move cross country for this. And the new studio they built for him…what a waste. If Leno were smart he would have just stepped down – now a bunch of people hate him. Way to go. I hope there’s ratings backlash like they’ve never seen before.
Unfortunately I watch way too many shows on NBC to boycott them completely (um, Chuck, all the Thursday night comedies, SNL, Notre Dame football…) but I can at least say with certainty that I will never watch Leno again.
Sorry for the essay – obviously I feel strongly on this subject. I may cry tomorrow night.
I couldn’t agree more! Conan brought his entire staff to Cali for this show and amazing opportunity. Such a shame to rip him of his dreams because Jay Leno wants his show back. Used to love Jay. Not so much anymore.
Yes! Cross-country moves are not easy (or cheap) and the fact that almost the entire staff picked up and moved to L.A. with him is just another testament to how awesome Conan is. I was sad to see Conan leave his show in NY, but was happy that he’d be on earlier so I could watch him more often. This whole thing just pisses me off!

I totally agree with you that NBC really screwed the pooch here. (Am not sure if I’m as mad at Leno… From what I’ve read – which I am sure is biased one way or the other – he has been jerked around by NBC too.)
Conan is amazing. I loved his statement. I loved how he’s handled the whole thing on his show – not pulling any punches, but still having good humor about the whole thing. I like him a lot better than Jay Leno. Hopefully he will find a better network to join so we can laugh with him again soon.
Also – glad you mentioned that Jimmy Kimmel interview. Wasn’t that PAINFUL? It was so mean! (I say gleefully…)
Word. Leno tried to damage control on his show about how it was all NBC’s idea and how he just went along with whatever they said, when we ALL know that he’s a powerful figure. HE could have changed this by bowing out gracefully, but he chose not to. Assfuck.
TEAM COCO FOREVS!
I agree. I’m sure Heather that you watched his last show tonight. I felt so bad for him and he was so kind and nice to NBC after all of this. He was so close to tears I was tearing up.
I agree this whole thing is a disaster. I’ve never been a Leno fan, always Dave and Conan, but I can’t boycott NBC completely because I love Chuck and a couple other shows they have… The whole thing is just sad.
