Well, damn. Talk about a loaded question.

Shall we start at the beginning?

Just kidding. (But that is me. Wasn’t I cute? I have no idea what happened.)

How about we skip a few years? I survived elementary, middle, and high school just fine. Graduated in 2000 and went off to college. Finished right on time in May 2004, graduating with a degree in communications and public relations. I got hired straight out of college at an ad agency. After 2+ years of living that pressure-filled lifestyle, I bailed on the company to go work as part of an in-house marketing team at XYZ Company (And no. In case you were wondering, that’s not the real name of it. So don’t go Googling it.).

Now that I’m in the “real world” and know how little money marketing people make, I realize I should have been a pharmacist (big $, companies fighting over you, big fat signing bonuses, access to prescription meds… sounds good, right?). Oh well. Live and learn, people. LIVE and LEARN.

(I’m kidding. Sort of.)

This is me with my brothers. All three of them (I bet some of you thought I only have two). You won’t hear me talk about Chris much. He’s 10.5 years older than me, and is technically my half brother. I love him dearly, but he grew up living with his mom all the way across the country, so the distance, combined with the age gap, never lent itself well to forming an extremely close relationship. I usually see him every few years, and we seldom talk in between–we’re horrible at keeping in touch. But you know what? It works for us. Our visits always involve us laughing and laughing and laughing. Oh, and beer. They always involve beer.

Tyler and Trevor are the ones you’ll hear me talk about often. They are my twin “baby” brothers. They are only two years younger than me, so I actually don’t remember my life without them. We kind of fought like cats and dogs growing up, but in between all of that arguing, we always loved having each other around. Now, all three of us are close friends.

This is my husband, Michael, and me. We met sophomore year of college in 2002, and we have basically been inseparable ever since then. We bought a condo together in June 2005, and have been living there happily, although we are starting to feel like we’re outgrowing it a bit. We’re going to try to ride it out a few more years before moving on to something bigger and better.

Tessa joined our family in April 2006 when she was just 10 weeks old. I won’t tell you too much about her, because she’s so special that she’s going to get her very own tab on the navigation bar. But I don’t think I have to tell you that she is the princess.

We absolutely adore the little girl, and we are so thankful that we came through a recent health scare with her. As it turned out, it was just a scare, and we are tremendously grateful. All we have to do is simply think about that time in our lives, and we live and feel it all over again. It certainly helps put everything else into perspective. We came away from that with some lasting life lessons, for sure.

On June 15, 2007, Michael proposed to me on a day when I would have least expected it. It was perfect, just the two of us at home. I was in gym shorts and a t-shirt, but I wouldn’t change it, even if I could.

I flung myself head first into wedding planning, and that’s how this blogging thing came about for me. I started to feel like I wanted to chronicle it all. Not only that, but I knew I was going to be the very definition of a DIY (and on a budget) bride, and I thought perhaps I could help people. So that was when Road to the Aisle was born. It’s funny, because I wasn’t sure anybody would ever read it. And at first, no one really did. Somewhere along the way, however, I picked up a pretty substantial following.

Even now that it’s essentially been abandoned (meaning no new posts), I still get a tremendous amount of traffic over there. I guess it has sort of become a DIY bride’s reference, and I think that’s pretty cool! (I guess it’s too bad I didn’t write a book instead of posting it all on the internet for free, huh? I kid, I kid.) I love going back to it now and then, mostly because it is a digital scrapbook of that time in my life, both wedding related and sometimes non-wedding related, too. I love that.

Michael and I were married on June 21, 2008. It was such an awesomely wonderful day. It was more than we could have ever hoped for, and we will cherish those memories forever.

On the Monday after the wedding, we left for our honeymoon in Hawaii. I think I’m going to use the phrase “awesomely wonderful” again, because I just can’t come up with any other words to describe it. We had an absolute blast. The more and more time that passes, the more and more we want to go back. And it hasn’t even been a year! We are in trouble, folks! We can’t wait to make it back there someday.

After the wedding and honeymoon, I knew I was going to want to continue blogging. Strictly for that whole “scrapbooking” reason, really. It’s a journal (albeit a public one), and more than anything, I want to have it for myself. The followers and the connections established with those followers are just bonuses. I never thought I’d have people who would still care to read my ramblings once they had nothing to do with weddings! But I do, and I thank everybody who is part of that following. It was in July 2008 that Heather Drive was born.

So what are we doing now? Just living life, really. When exciting things happen, they usually make it to the blog in one form or another. Sometimes, even boring things make it here (though I try to keep that to a minimum). I share my thoughts and stories. I share photos. I share recipes (mmm, food). I talk politics, but usually only when I’m pissed about them, which thankfully hasn’t happened recently (yay Obama).

We’ll see what the future holds. I hope you’ll keep visiting Heather Drive.

I’m Heather. And this is my life.

What’s for dinner? Or, come on, we all know the better question is–What’s for dessert?

I don’t have a “food blog,” per se, but I do love food, and hey, I have recipes. So I share.

I have a general list of “labels” in the left sidebar on this blog. That will probably always be the best place to go to “browse” recipes, since you can scroll through posts in their entirety and see all of the PICTURES! But in case you’re searching for something specific, this area will serve as a bit of an index. I’ll have more room to classify recipes under more categories, and you’ll be able to easily find individual recipes.

I am in a serious blogging rut, y’all.

(And apparently I’m channeling Paula Deen.)

I think this is the worst it has ever been. Not only can I not think of anything to write about these days, but I’m also kind of feeling like I don’t want to write. I guess you can say that I am seriously uninspired.

It’s been like this for weeks. I’ve been trying to fight it, but I do apologize, my dear readers, because I don’t think I’ve been doing a very good job.

And life? Well, life has been really routine. Nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing especially fun going on. So, that? It just feeds the boring.

The only thing I am feeling like I can promise is that it won’t be like this forever. I appreciate all of you sticking with me.

If you want to go the extra mile, perhaps you all could give me a little bit of inspiration. Help me get my fingers tap, tap, tapping the keys again. Is there something I’ve mentioned in passing that I should talk more about? Is there anything inquiring minds want to know?

*crickets*

Bueller? Buell–No? Well, OK then. I’ll try to get the wheels turning again…

My only problem today is that I can’t decide which news to share with you all.

I could tell you I got a new job and we’re moving.

I could tell you that I’ve been infected with the Conficker virus (don’t open any e-mails from me!).

I could tell you I’m pregnant.

Or maybe I should mention we won the lottery?

Oh, yeah. And you should know I’m quitting the blog.

But of course, if I told you these things… that would make me a big. fat. liar. :)

April Fool’s Day is fun and all, but for the most part, I’m not a big fan of being fooled! I suppose it depends on the joke, however.

One year, when my mom was still having my taxes done with her taxes, she called me to tell me her tax guy had called and said there had been a mistake on my return, and I actually owed the IRS a lot of money. I was all upset, and then she told me–April Fool’s! NOT FUNNY, Mom.

Going back to my younger days, I have fond memories of tricking my brothers, babysitters, friends, etc. I specifically remember coloring a rubberband black (using a Sharpie) and then putting it around the button to the sprayer on the kitchen sink. I came up with some excuse to get my babysitter to turn on the sink and HAHAHAHA! SOAKED. I was quite the peach.

My cousin is known for pulling pranks on her poor, unsuspecting mother. The year she was getting married (in September), she called her mom on April Fool’s Day, crying hysterically, saying that she and her fiance had gotten into a huge fight and they were calling off the wedding. Another year, I’m pretty sure she told her mom she was pregnant, too. Now she’s both married AND pregnant (for real this time), so there’s that. Lord knows what she’ll come up with this year.

So what are your best (or worst) April Fool’s Day pranks? Ones you have pulled off, or ones you have fallen for? The “holiday” itself–do you love it or hate it?

Remember back in November when I set out on a search for the perfect chili? Well, um… I haven’t exactly been diligent in my searching. We haven’t made chili since. Whoops.

A couple of years ago, we went to our friends’ house for a Super Bowl party. They made chili for us, and it was really good. After our “meh” experience with the chili we tried in November, I remembered our friends’ chili. So, the next time we saw them, I asked for the recipe. They had just had a baby, she was going back to work, etc., so weeks went by before we actually got the recipe. And once we had it in our hands, I had to laugh–it was cheater chili!

What do I mean by cheater chili? It’s from a kit!

But you know… sometimes, there’s really no reason to make things more difficult than they should be. Do I still want to find a good, more complex, truly “homemade” chili? Yes. With that said, there are times when “cheater chili” is more than appropriate.

We bought the ingredients for this chili several weeks ago, but something came up and we bumped it off of the menu for the week. We wanted to make it before it gets too warm out, so we decided to give it a go this weekend. Saturday was absolutely gorgeous and so NOT chili weather, but Sunday, although warm, was rainy and gloomy, and chili was a good fit.

Off of our friend’s recommendation, we used the Carroll Shelby’s Chili Kit. We only used about half that salt packet… it seemed like a lot of salt! And we certainly didn’t miss the other half of it. For the record, I had a really hard time locating this kit in my grocery store. I ended up asking a stock person, and as it turned out, it was located with all of the gravy mixes. Go figure!

We “made it our own” by adding two cans of kidney beans, a green pepper, and an onion (in addition to the ingredients listed on the back of the box–ground beef, a small can of tomato sauce, and water). We also served it over brown rice.

Cheater Chili
(Source: Carroll Shelby)

Ingredients:
– 1 lb. ground beef
– 1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce (we used “No Salt Added”)
– 2 (8 oz.) cans filled with water
– 1 large onion, diced
– 1 large green pepper, diced
– 2 cans red kidney beans
– 6 cups brown rice, prepared
– shredded cheddar for topping

Directions:
1. In large skillet, combine ground beef, green peppers and onions. Cook over high heat until meat is browned and vegetables are soft.

2. Pour meat/veggie mixture into stock pot. Add tomato sauce, water, and beans. From the kit, add seasoning packet, salt, and cayenne pepper. Stir until combined. Simmer for 15 minutes.

3. For thicker chili, combine masa flour packet (included in kit) with 1/3 cup water. Pour into chili. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes.

4. Serve chili over rice. Top with shredded cheddar.

Could it be any easier?
